During the early 1990's, the BEP tried to use a different kind of printing press to produce currency. Instead of being sheet-fed, the press was fed with a continuous roll of paper. The hopes of this experiment was to create a way of printing $1 bills in a quicker manner (since printing ones consumed the majority of time spend printing all denominations of currency). The new press did not meet expectations and was put out of commission (for currency printing purposes) in November, 1996. Web notes get their name from the type of press used - the Alexander Hamilton Web Press. Some web notes are quite common...others are extremely scarce.
